What are cable tie mounts?

Rack enclosure cabinets filled with wires and equipment

Cable tie mounts are support bases used to hold cable ties in place. They typically feature adhesive backing or mounting holes for screws. Made from durable plastic, they ensure cable zip tie mounts remain fixed in a desired position. These mounts come in various sizes and designs to suit different cable tie types. In this guide, we’ll take a closer look, covering:

Cable tie mounts:  what you need to know

One of the hallmarks of a professionally designed and assembled project is the careful installation of cables. Cable management is accomplished with various methods.

Zip cable ties are often used to bundle wiring neatly and cleanly. While push-mount cable ties can be attached directly to the mounting surface, a holder cable or a mounting base offers an alternative.  This is where cable tie mounts come in.

Cable tie mounts are fundamental components for cable management systems. They provide a secure anchor point, allowing cable ties to function effectively. A cable tie mount will help prevent damage to cables and conductors by routing them around and away from moving parts. For example, they can be used to isolate conductor bundles from pinch points created by weatherproof outdoor cabinet doors and hinges. Using cable zip tie mounts in strategic locations keeps cables neatly in place.

Factors to consider when specifying cable mounts

When selecting the right cable tie mount for your application, it’s important to think beyond just the type of cable tie being used. A few key factors will influence the long-term reliability, safety, and performance of your cable management setup.

Mounting surface

The type of surface—flat, curved, metal, plastic, or painted—determines the best mount type. Adhesive mounts work best on smooth, clean surfaces, while screw or push-mounts suit more rugged or uneven areas.

Environment

Consider temperature, moisture, UV exposure, and chemical presence. Outdoor or industrial use may call for stainless steel cable ties or UV-resistant plastics like nylon 6.6.

Cable tie wrap sizes
Ensure the mount suits the width and strength rating of the tie. Larger bundles need mounts with greater load capacity, especially when using heavy duty cable ties.

Flexibility vs. stability

If the cable bundle needs to move or shift, a swivel or adjustable mount may be ideal. For fixed, high-security installations, a rigid, screw-down mount gives you maximum stability.

Types of cable tie mounts

We offer different mounting options to suit different installation needs, including adhesive cable tie mounts. For optimal performance, adhesive cable tie mounts should be stored in their original, unopened packaging at room temperature and out of direct sunlight, where the adhesive backing remains effective for up to one year.

Key applications of cable tie mounts

Digital Infrastructure

Used in server rooms, data centres, and telecom cabinets to keep cables tidy and off the floor. Makes it easier to trace connections and avoid tangles.

Specialist Vehicles

Fitted inside vehicles to hold wiring in place — under the dash, in the engine bay, or along the bodywork. Helps stop cables from moving, rubbing, or getting damaged.

Energy Transformation

Keeps cables secure on solar panels, battery systems, and wind turbines. Useful in places exposed to sun, rain, and wind where cables need to stay put long-term.

Equipment & Machine Building

Used inside machines and control panels to route cables away from moving parts. Makes installations cleaner and helps with servicing later.

Defence

Helps secure power and comms cables in vehicles, equipment, and shelters. Chosen for jobs where things need to hold up in rough conditions.

Cable tie mounts: special considerations

Some cabling configurations require cables to be fastened around and off of the panel boards in electric cable enclosures. While you could use adhesive cable tie mounts or screw/rivet mounts for this, that's not always the best option.

For example, if the panel needs to be removed from the enclosure, you must cut the cable ties, allowing the cables to flop around loosely. Additionally, if using a screw or rivet mount, you have to drill holes in the enclosure, downgrading the rating of the panel.

To get around this problem, use an edge mount cable tie mount. These are designed to be affixed to the edge of the panel. They work with both metal and plastic panels. These also give you the ability to completely mount the cables before installing the panel into the enclosure.
