How to choose the right air hose

Pneumatic machines are indispensable, so make sure you choose quality air hoses. If you opt for a standard hose, you should use a hose reel.

Which hose length should you choose?

  • The longer the hose between compressor & tool, the more air pressure is lost on route.
  • Couplers let you add hoses to extend reach.
  • Expect small drops in pressure when adding hoses.
  • Always balance maneuverability of your air tool with minimum loss of pressure.

Which hose I.D.?

  • The larger the hose internal diameter (I.D.), the more air it can carry.
  • Hose diameter affects overall weight of the line.
  • The higher the CFM the larger diameter hose needed.
  • In small handheld tools, choose a 6mm hose.

Different types of air hoses

Recoil

  • Tensile, has memory
  • Springs back when not in use
  • Easier storage

Standard

  • No resistance
  • Easier to handle

A standard air hose can be looped for storage but remains loose.

Air hose materials

Nylon is lightweight and easy to store, so is well suited for applications that require higher working pressure from 315 psi to 120 psi.

Neoprene is highly flexible, so is best for air hose applications that need precision when directed at the work area.

Polyurethane has a long life and is lightweight. It is ideal for applications where abrasion resistance is important.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) has low-temperature flexibility, so can be used for applications that require resistance to outdoor elements.

Thermoplastic air hoses have low expansion and have the ability to withstand the rigors of industrial usage.

Air hose considerations

That's not all you need to think about when it comes to your pneumatic power system. Each pneumatics component needs to be up for the job, so carefully consider:

  • Air cylinders and accessories such as speed controllers
  • Pressure gauges
  • Air lubricators
  • Air regulators
  • Compressed air filters
