Identifying threads and connectors

The wrong parts can damage your thread during installation, which in turn compromises the pressure holding capacity and seal reliability of your hydraulic hose coupling, fitting or adapter.

Be precise. Different type thread sizes are often very similar. Follow the instructions to accurately get the required thread.

You’ll need:

✔ Caliper

✔ Screw pitch gauge, also known as a thread gauge and pitch gauge

✔ Thread Identification Tables

Optional:

✔ Seat gauge

Thread types

Your thread type will likely be one of these:

Step 1: Inspect the thread

Is the thread tapered or parallel? Visual inspection should be enough to answer this question.

  • If you can’t tell, then use the jaws of your caliper to measure the first, fourth and last full thread.
  • If the measurements are all the same, you’re dealing with a parallel thread, also known as a straight thread.
  • If the measurements decrease, then you need a tapered thread.

Hint: Examine the seal. For example, NPT thread and BSPT thread are tapered. These threads create a seal through metal-to-metal wedging or some deformation of the threads. Parallel threads, however, usually require an O-ring or thread tape to provide the seal.

Step 2: Measure the diameter

Measure the thread diameter with your caliper.

  • For male threads, measure the Outside Diameter (O.D). For female threads, measure the Inside Diameter (I.D).
  • Tapered: measure the 4th and 5th thread
  • Parallel: measure any full thread corridor

Step 3: Measure the pitch

A thread’s pitch size is the number of threads per inch. (On metric threat types, it’s the distance between threads.)

  • Use your screw pitch gauge to check the thread against each gauge, or form, until you find a match.
  • Be aware that some fractional and metric thread forms are comparable, so look for an exact match.
  • You’ll know you have a match when the gauge sits neatly within the threaded form.
  • It’s always a good idea to use several different gauges to make sure you get the right fit.

Step 4: Measure the seat

This is an optional step, but it will confirm the thread you need.

  • With your seat gauge, measure any angle of the sealing surface.
  • When a matching angle is found, your gauge will be parallel to the connector axis. You can also use your seat gauge to measure internal angles.

Hint: Some fittings have dual seats, such as JIC 37˚ and SAE 45˚.

Step 5: Designate the thread

Take your measurements and match them to the Thread Identification tables.

 

NPT & NPS pipe threads

Know your threads

  • NPT is National Pipe Taper (American) – Thread form per ANSI/ASME B1.20.1
  • NPS is National Pipe Straight (PARALLEL) – Thread form per ANSI/ASME B1.20.1
  • NPTF is National Pipe Taper for Fuel – Thread form per SAE J476
  • NPSM is National Pipe Straight Mechanical – Thread form per ANSI/ASME B1.20.1

NPT vs NPTF

They have different major and minor diameters. There are also differences in the root and crest of the threads. While NPTF thread crests sit within the same parameters as NPT standards, NPTF crests have a smaller range. Also, NPT requires a seal to be leak proof while NPTF do not.

NPT vs NPS

NPT and NPS have the same thread angle, shape, and pitch (threads per inch). Both threads also share a 60° included angle and have flat peaks and valleys. NPT and NPS threads will engage, but note, they fail to seal properly with each other.

Measuring

Measure NPT male thread O.D. and NPT female thread I.D. at first full thread near end of fitting. In the tables below, thread size refers to the nominal bore of the pipe. Pitch = Threads Per Inch (TPI).

Subtract approx. 1/4″ (6mm) from thread diameter (TD) measurement for nominal pipe size (NPS): TD – 0.25in = NPS

SAE Threads

What is SAE thread?

SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers. SAE fittings are mostly used in refrigeration, automotive piping systems and other low-pressure applications. It’s common for copper tubes to be used with SAE threads.

SAE Flare (SAE J512)

The SAE male and female halves both have a 45° flare seat. The threads of the two halves meet to form a strong mechanical connection. The seal is formed on the 45° flare seat. Except for the seat angles, the SAE 45° Flare connectors mirror JIC 37° Flare connectors. Some fittings in these sizes have both JIC 37° & SAE 45° seats.

SAE Straight Thread O-Ring Boss

SAE straight, or parallel, threads seal because of the 90-durometer Buna-N O-Ring, making this an extremely reliable and a re-useable thread type.

British Standard Pipe Thread

  • BSP is British Standard Pipe, also known as Whitworth 55° Thread Form
  • BSPT is British Standard Pipe Taper – Thread form per AS 1722.1, BS 21, ISO 7
  • BSPP is British Standard Pipe Parallel – Thread form per AS 1722.2, ISO 228

You should know:

  • BSPT male threads seal against threads of fixed BSPT female threads.
  • For best results, use a threat sealant for BSPT male to BSPT female connections.
  • Measure the BSPT male thread O.D. and female thread I.D. at the first complete thread near the fitting’s end.
  • BSPT male and BSPP male with conical 30° seat (60° included angle) seal against matching conical 30° seat of BSPP female swivel.

JIC Thread

JIC stands for Joint Industry Council – SAE J514, ISO 8434-2.

You should know:

  • JIC fittings are a type of flare fitting machined with a 37° flare seating surface, used in fluid power applications where high pressure (up to 10,000 psi) is involved.
  • These are a metal-to-metal sealing-type fitting, and have Unified Thread Standard (Fine) (UNF).
  • In Europe, they’re the most common American fitting type.

ORFS Thread

ORFS stands for O Ring Face Seal.

ORFSs have a high level of sealing due to their O-ring compression mechanism. Because of their good vibration resistance, ORFS has grown in international popularity as a fitting type for OEM machines.

You should know:

  • The ORFS system includes male fittings with the O-ring in a groove in the flat face.
  • The female fittings consist of flat faces and straight, or parallel, threaded UNF swivel nuts.
  • With an ORFS fitting, you can build the hose assembly into a fixed distance or space. The male and female fittings’ flat faces mean you don’t have to move back other system components. You can simply slot the hose assembly in.
  • Unified Thread Standard, fine, (UNF) includes Unified Special Threads (UNS) and Unified (UN).

JIS Threads

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standards. In Japan, there are four popular coupling styles. The first two are:

1. JIS Tapered Pipe Thread

This connector is identical to and interchangeable with the BSPT connector, which is also tapered. Note: the Japanese male thread does not have a 30° flare. It will not mate with the BSPP female swivel with inverted seat.

The seal on the Japanese tapered pipe thread connector is made on the threads. For best results, always use a thread sealant.

2. JIS 30˚ Flare (female internal cone seat)

JIS 30˚ Flare uses a 60° inverted seat and BSPP threads. Both the Japanese and British have a 30˚ seat, but the British seat is inverted, so they are not compatible.

3. Komatsu® Style Flange Fitting

The Komatsu® style flange fitting is nearly identical to and fully interchangeable with the SAE Code 61 flange fitting (5/8 is not in the SAE standards). The O-ring dimensions are different in each size. You must use an SAE-style O-ring when replacing a Komatsu® style flange with an SAE style flange.

Metric French GAZ

These couplings are also known as Metric French GAZ 24° due to the fact that they have a 24˚ seat and metric threads.

  • These couplings are quite similar to DIN couplings, but the threads differ in some sizes.
  • Both are metric threads, but Din couplings rely on coarse threads in larger sizes while French threads are fine.
  • Metric French GAZ reflects fractional number metric O.D. tubing, as shown in the table.

Metric French Millimetric

While Metric French GAZ uses fractional number metric O.D. tubing, Metric French Millimetric uses whole number metric O.D. tubing. Note, the two series cannot connect to each other.

  • These seal on a 24° cone seat, which is located internally on the male connector using straight fine metric threads.
  • The male can connect to a straight thread female swivel with a spherical nose seat and also flareless tube, tube nut and compression olive, or cutting ring.
  • Tightening the female nut compresses the olive. This makes it cut into the tube, which creates a seal between the tube, olive and 24° male cone.

Din Thread

DIN stands for Deutsche Industrie Normen, which means German Institute of Standardization. DIN develops standards for virtually every product manufactured and developed, so different fittings have different DIN standards.

DIN Standards are reviewed at least every five years. If a standard no longer reflects the current state of technology, it is either revised or withdrawn.

  • DIN type tube fittings conform to the requirements of ISO 8434-1, DIN 2353, and DIN EN 3850 standards, which ensures interchangeability.
  • These flareless metric fittings are the most popular bite-type fittings in the world. They include a body, ferrule, or cutting ring, and nut. DIN connections are used in:
  1. Tube fittings
  2. Alternating valves
  3. Banjo and swivel couplings
  4. Check and non-return valves

With different configurations and threaded connections, DIN 2353 fittings are able to meet varying connection challenges, and are offered in different pressure series:

  1. LL for Extra Light – for low-pressure applications
  2. L for Light – for medium-pressure applications
  3. S for Heavy – high-pressure applications

Light and Heavy are the most widely used. Popular DIN fittings include:

  1. Thread Form per DIN 3853, ISO 261
  2. 24° Cone Seat per DIN 3861, ISO 8434-1/DIN 2353
  3. O Ring Seal per DIN 3865
  4. Bonded Seal and Port per DIN 3852-1

Pitch is included in dash size. For hose couplings and most adaptors, pitch is not included in the dash size.
