How Does a Lynch Pin Work?

A lynch pin is also spelled as lynchpin or linchpin, and known as a clip or quick pin.  Overall, a lynch pin provides a simple yet effective means of securing various elements in machinery applications. It typically consists of a cylindrical pin with a loop or ring at one end and a crossbar or other mechanism at the other end. To use a lynch pin, follow these steps. 

  1. The cylindrical pin is inserted through corresponding holes in the components, with the loop or ring end preventing it from fully passing through.
  2. When adjustments or maintenance is needed, remove the crossbar or mechanism. You can then simply withdraw the pin.

Lynch Pins vs. Wire Lock Pins

There’s a school of thought that wire lock pins are a type of lynch pin. They serve similar functions in mechanical systems, but differ in their design and method of operation.

Wire lock pins are one-piece and often called clevis pins. They’re designed with all the benefits of a clevis and cotter pin combination, but provide an alternative single and dependable assembly.

Attachment mechanism Uses a crossbar or mechanism to secure the pin in place once inserted through a hole. Uses a wire loop that pulls through a hole & twisted to lock the pin in position.

Security As it’s easier to remove, security is not equal to wire locking pin. May provide slightly more security once installed, as the twisted wire loop creates a tighter grip on the pin.
