The captive screw retainer flange is an alternative to either tapping the panel or using a retainer washer. The retainer flange is fixed to the panel by swaging the head into a countersunk hole.

The captive screw is then simply threaded through the flange and is retained in the panel.

They are used to comply with Machinery Detective 2006/42/EC - typically to ISO 14583, which requires fasteners to stay attached to fixed guards or applications when they are removed.

The screws are made from Stainless Steel, which is corrosion resistant and slightly magnetic, and you can find a group of screws with a blackened finish and others without.These screws are commonly used in electronics, industrial machinery, cabinets, panels and medical devices. Please keep in mind that because these screws have a smaller shank diameter, they should not be tightened to the suggested torque for an identical screw with the same thread size.
