Backhaul set to grow outdoor market
Durable outdoor units are currently commonly being used for mobile backhaul applications. Wireless backhaul is the use of wireless communications to get data from an end user to a major network. That network might be the internet or the proprietary network of a corporation or government. The most common method of wireless backhaul consists of microwave systems, although satellites can also be used.
Full outdoor microwave transmission units did well in the final quarter of 2016, according to research from the telecommunications, networks and data centre IT industries research firm Dell’Oro Group. Sales of outdoor microwave transmission units were led by NEC, Ceragon and Huawei.
“It was a great surprise to see that full outdoor unit shipments grew a little over 50 per cent quarter-over-quarter,” says Jimmy Yu, vice president at Dell’Oro Group. “We’ve held a long-term positive view for full outdoor units and to see its adoption in mobile backhaul applications pick up dramatically this past quarter was
“We think the momentum will continue in 2017, especially in India and North America, and project full outdoor unit shipments to reach new highs,” Yu says.
The point-to-point microwave transmission market was worth $3.7 billion in 2016. In rank order, market leaders were Huawei, Ericsson and NEC. Full outdoor unit shipments in 2016 were approximately 295,000 and are forecast to grow 17 per cent in 2017, says Dell’Oro Group.
