How to choose the right lock

With so many different types of latches and locks on offer, it can be hard to select the perfect solution for your application, from locks for cabinet doors to industrial door latches. Here we explore some key areas to consider and help to make your selection process easier.

1) Think about security and cylinder type

The level of security you require for your lock depends on its intended use. An application, such as an outdoor enclosure for electrical equipment, will often require an extra heavy duty lock or heavy duty door latch, because anyone can attempt to access it. A more controlled environment, such as industrial manufacturing, could use an easy-to-open quarter turn latch. You can also consider the cylinder type, which will impact how the lock is opened.

There are three main systems:

  • Keyed alike – all locks opened by the same key
  • Keyed different – each lock requires a unique key
  • Master system – one master key can open all locks, even if they are keyed different

Understanding your security requirements and who needs to access your locked application is essential.

  • A cam lock for cabinets will give you high security.
  • Example, consider adjustable compression latches. Look for ones rated IP65, which will also give you a level of protection against dust and low water-pressure ingress, making this a good lock for an outdoor utility cabinet.

2) What's your direct application?

Your lock will be going into an application such as a door or panel that could be made from a number of materials. With each material there are different variables to consider.

Furniture based lock

    Wooden doors

  • Consider a furniture-based lock with an anti-drill centre that could offer a higher level of security, which is necessary when bearing in mind that a wooden door is more susceptible to tampering.
  • It’s the same for drawers and cupboards. A good lock in this instance is a furniture lock with a vertical slide for wood.

Metal doors

  • The depth of the door impacts the lock you choose. Depending on depth, you’ll need to pick an appropriate housing that fits the application and offers the functionality you require.
  • A cylinder camlock offers a number of housing options as well as many style options.
  • For cabinets, look at heavy-duty cabinet locks. If you’re looking for an electrical panel lock, a spring loaded latch, such as a quarter turn is always good.

3) Consider style and handling

The style of your lock has an impact on how it operates in its application. Think about how you would like to open and close your lock.

  • If you’re dealing with a tight space, and security is not an issue, consider a magnetic cabinet latch. Quick and easy to install, magnetic catches absorb the door in an effect manner.

If safety and health need to be considered:

4) Understand the environment and material

As important as your direct application, the external environment that you are functioning in plays a pivotal role in the selection of the right locking solution. The key factor affected by environment is the material you should choose for your lock.

  • Outdoor or harsh environments: These applications require added resistance to the elements. Opt for external locks such as stainless steel cam lock, which not only gives you security but resistance to corrosion.
  • Indoor or stable environments: More standard and protected applications require less specific material features. Cam lock installation is easy, so think about a lock manufactured in a Die-Cast Zinc Alloy or Polyamide. If space is limited, go with Mini Adjustable Compression Latches.

5) Do you need lock accessories?

If you’re looking to fix your lock in position, then adding a fixing ring can cheaply offer further protection against vibration, as well as preventing unnecessary movement in unsteady environments.

In order to keep locks operable and functioning efficiently, a dust cap can also be used. This is especially suited to a dusty or humid environment where locks are in constant operation. A dust cap comes with some mini cam locks.
